Overview

This Cookie Policy explains how Black Opal Solutions Ltd ("Black Opal", "we", "us", or "our") uses cookies and similar browser storage technologies on our website at blackopal.so. It should be read in conjunction with our Privacy Policy.

This policy is issued in compliance with the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) guidance on cookies.

What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a web server when you visit a website. Cookies allow the website to recognise your device on subsequent visits and remember preferences or session state. We also use localStorage, a browser-based storage mechanism that works similarly but is never transmitted to our servers.

Categories of Cookies We Use

Analytics Cookies

We use a third-party analytics platform to understand how visitors interact with our website — including pages visited, navigation paths, and JavaScript errors. This helps us improve the website and diagnose technical issues.

Our Analytics Provider

We use PostHog (PostHog Inc.), configured to store and process all data on EU-based infrastructure at eu.posthog.com. Analytics requests are proxied through our own domain at /api/telemetry to improve reliability. PostHog does not use your data for advertising or share it with third parties.

PostHog's privacy policy is available at posthog.com/privacy.

PostHog is configured with the following settings:

  • Autocapture — automatic capture of page views, page exits, clicks, and site interactions
  • Exception capture — records JavaScript errors to help us diagnose site issues
  • Web vitals — records page performance metrics
  • Session recordingdisabled

PostHog assigns each visitor an anonymous identifier and associates the following data with it over the course of their visits: browser name and version, device type, approximate geographic location derived from IP address (city, region, country, and postal code), time zone, initial landing URL, and referral or campaign parameters where present in the URL. This constitutes an anonymous visitor profile. At no point is this profile linked to a personal identity — we do not call any user identification function, and no name, email address, or other identifying information is associated with it.

Legal basis: Analytics cookies are set on the basis of our legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR) in understanding and improving our website. You may opt out at any time (see below).

Functional Storage

We use browser localStorage (not a cookie) to store your display preference for our website theme (light or dark mode). This data is stored exclusively on your device and is never transmitted to our servers or any third party.

Legal basis: This storage is strictly necessary to provide the display preference you have requested and does not require consent under PECR.

Cookie Inventory

The following table lists all cookies and browser storage currently set on this website:

Name Provider Type Purpose Duration
ph_<token>_posthog PostHog (EU) Analytics Stores an anonymous visitor identifier, session state, and feature flag assignments; associated data includes browser, device type, approximate location, and navigation history 365 days
opal-theme Black Opal (localStorage) Functional Stores your chosen website theme (light or dark mode) Persistent (localStorage — no expiry; cleared when you clear browser data)
opal-cookie-consent Black Opal (localStorage) Functional Stores your analytics cookie preference (accepted or declined) Persistent (localStorage — no expiry; cleared when you clear browser data)
No Strictly Necessary Cookies

This website does not use authentication, shopping carts, or server-side sessions. We therefore set no strictly necessary cookies. The only third-party cookie is PostHog's analytics identifier.

Managing Your Cookie Preferences

Browser-Level Controls

All modern browsers allow you to view, block, or delete cookies and clear localStorage through their settings.

Guidance for major browsers:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

Our Cookie Banner

When you first visit our website, a banner will appear below the navigation bar offering you the option to accept or decline analytics cookies. Your choice is saved in your browser's localStorage under the key opal-cookie-consent and applied immediately.

You may revisit this decision at any time by clicking Manage my cookies in the footer of any page. This will re-display the cookie banner so you can change your preference.

Opting Out of PostHog Analytics

You can opt out of PostHog analytics tracking entirely in any of the following ways:

  • Using the cookie banner on our site (see above)
  • Clicking Manage my cookies in the footer of any page
  • Visiting posthog.com/privacy and using their global opt-out mechanism
  • Blocking cookies from blackopal.so in your browser settings

Blocking the PostHog cookie does not affect your ability to use any part of this website.

No Impact on Content Access

Declining analytics cookies does not prevent you from accessing any content on our website. The site is fully functional without any cookies set. However, because PostHog is also used for automatic error tracking, opting out may reduce our ability to detect and diagnose technical issues you experience during your visit.

Policy Updates

We review and update this Cookie Policy when we make material changes to our use of cookies or when required by changes in applicable law. The date of the most recent update is shown at the top of this policy.

Continued use of our website following publication of an updated policy constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
